The best desktop OS is…

Windows is getting better, albeit with SP hick-ups, but the Linux desktop is still the best desktop.

To take one example of why I'm in no danger of switching to Windows anytime soon, security continues to be a fundamental problem in any variety of Windows starting with Windows for Workgroups to Vista SP1 and Server 2008. In fact, the newest…

Microsoft warns of IE7 lock-in with XP SP3

You can't go backwards or forwards with SP3, truly 'screwed' down.

The inability to downgrade to IE6 after installing XP SP3 was by design, said Maliouta, because the service pack includes newer versions of the old browser's files. If Microsoft had allowed users to revert back to the pre-SP3 version of…

Flipping the Linux switch: Cairo-Dock is pain free eye candy

It’s a weird phenomenon. Nearly every computer platform steals another one’s look. Vista gets accused of trying to look too much like OS X. Linux desktops get accused of trying to look like Vista (except when they’re accused of ripping off OS X). There is the Avant Window Navigator, and though it does the trick quite nicely.

Right, which is why I said that x86 installs are fairly straightforward, and you click on the .deb files. However, as stated (at the paragraph starting: A 64-bit OS makes it a little stickier), a 64 bit version of Ubuntu will NOT run an…

The heron has landed: a review of Ubuntu 8.04

Ubuntu 8.04 was released last month with highly-anticipated features like PulseAudio, GNOME 2.22, and Wubi. Although this release is a strong incremental improvement over its predecessor, we found some serious bugs that detract from the overall user experience. Ars takes a close look to find out if Hardy Heron raises the bar.

Ubuntu 8.04, codenamed Hardy Heron, spread its wings and flew out of the nest last month. This is the second Ubuntu release to offer long-term support, which means that critical updates will be available on the desktop for three years and on…

Troll treasure: an in-depth look at Qt 4.4

Trolltech has announced the official release of Qt 4.4, a new version of the popular open source software development toolkit.

An intriguing benefit of Qt support for Windows CE is that it will expand the ecosystem of open source software available for the operating system by enabling developers to port over existing KDE and Qt applications. I know I'd love to be…

From Win32 to Cocoa: a Windows user’s conversion to Mac OS X

In part two of our special three-part feature, Peter Bright digs deep into Win32, .NET, and Vista and discusses how it all got to be so “shambolic.” When it comes to nurturing developers, Windows has become a disaster zone.

So .NET could have been a step into the 21st century. It could have been, but it wasn't. Technically, .NET was fine. The virtual machine infrastructure was pretty sound, the performance was reasonable, and C# was an adequate (if not…

Does Ballmer Need To Go?

Microsofts dramatic decision this weekend to withdraw its offer for Yahoo and not pursue a hostile bid raises a whole host of questions. What happens to Yahoo now? What happens to Microsoft? Or is this just a tactic to drive down the price of Yahoos shares so that Microsoft can go hostile with a lower offer? does ballmer need to go?

Google, a company with a monopoly in search, should have just stood by and watched the trains either come together or pass each other on the rails. Instead, they immediately started talking with its competitor about how to thwart a deal with the…

Why Brazil Loves Linux

Brazil often makes Linux-related headlines, the latest being the adoption of KDE in Brazilian public schools. Its clear that Brazil is enamored with Linux, but why? This is an important question for Microsoft since emerging markets are key to sales growth.

Before Windows Genuine Advantage, Microsoft’s strategy was to ignore the pirates: sell to the corporations, let everyone else copy it. Now regular people are growing third arms and paying for Windows licenses. Fair enough:…

Has Ubuntu Made it? Is it ready for the Massas? - A Test

My questions arise after reading both a Digg post & eventually a linked post on Linux today with a test one done on Content Consumer. It was a well thought out document on how his girlfriend thought, & how being out of her comfort zone and into something new would work out.

Johnny hadn't noticed the add/remove programs yet, & since he had some success on Google finding what he needed to get his monitors working, heck why not! He tried the help section earlier and type in “dual monitors”, but…
