Six Annoyances in Hardy Heron Ubuntu

“Im a huge fan of Ubuntu Linux. Ive used many flavors of Linux over the years, and Ubuntu is my favorite by far. So it pains me to write this. For my needs, Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) is worse than 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).”

I’m giving my raw perspective as a user, and the upshot is that Hardy Heron feels like a step backwards on the things that matter to me. If I were a GNOME/Ubuntu/Canonical dev, my first reaction would be to leave a comment that says…

Next Ubuntu LTS in 2010, unless Linuxes synchronize

Mark Shuttleworth, head of Canonical and founder of the Ubuntu project, has called on other Linux developers to synchronize releases of new versions of their distros. He also pledged to deliver the next Long Term Support (LTS) release of Ubuntu, version 10.4, in April 2010.

He pledged: “If two out or three of Red Hat (RHEL), Novell (SLES) and Debian are willing to agree in advance on a date to the nearest month, and thereby on a combination of kernel, compiler toolchain, GNOME/KDE, X and…

Kubuntu KDE4 In-Depth Review: An Ubuntu User’s View

With the release of KDE4 it might be worth taking a second look at Kubuntu. A long time Ubuntu user gives an in depth analysis of how the latest Kubuntu release stacks up against Ubuntu and where the Intrepid Ibex release might be taking us.

Another thing I noticed was that the KDE window manager KWin has some nice options that just aren’t present in Gnome. (and a few that are but that I never knew about because they aren’t configurable so I’d never…

Fedora 9 Gives Ubuntu a Run For Its Money

Fedora 9 is a significant upgrade and packs in a number of new features. Perhaps the best part of Fedora 9 is the new live USB options. After playing with the release candidate for a week or so Im happy to report that Fedora 9 has made some significant strides and gives Ubuntu a serious run for its money when it comes ot user-friendliness.

Fedora is also free. “Run for it's money is just a saying”. However, Fedora is a fast paced rpm based distribution. If you've ever gone through dependancy hell, you've probably quit using Fedora several releases ago. Every 6…

Firefox 3 Ubuntu freeze up workaround

The worst thing about the new 'Fox on ubuntu!

I get random freezes all the time in Gutsy 7.10 AMD64. Seems especially frequent when using Evolution. Looking at Sys Monitor, it appears that my system skips between maxing out one core and then the other. Super frustrating.

The best and worst docks for Ubuntu

Docks became popular when Mac began using them in their operating system. But these days docks are available on all platforms.
So which ones should you avoid and which ones should you use?

Short for Avant Window Navigator, AWN is one of the best docks availabe this day. It offers great applets, you can download themes from the internet, it has a flat and 3d look (look here for the curved look). You can set all kind of…

The heron has landed: a review of Ubuntu 8.04

Ubuntu 8.04 was released last month with highly-anticipated features like PulseAudio, GNOME 2.22, and Wubi. Although this release is a strong incremental improvement over its predecessor, we found some serious bugs that detract from the overall user experience. Ars takes a close look to find out if Hardy Heron raises the bar.

Ubuntu 8.04, codenamed Hardy Heron, spread its wings and flew out of the nest last month. This is the second Ubuntu release to offer long-term support, which means that critical updates will be available on the desktop for three years and on…

Mrs Red Devil Installs Ubuntu 8.04

If Ubuntu 8.04 presents so few problems for Mrs RD, it must be doing pretty much everything right, mustn’t it?

MRS Red Devil is, without being unkind, not the most computer literate person on the planet. She is a wonderful wife and mother, a faithful friend, kind and generous with her time and energy – and very cute, to boot. But when it comes to…

Has Ubuntu Made it? Is it ready for the Massas? - A Test

!= ubuntu girlfirend
My questions arise after reading both a Digg post & eventually a linked post on Linux today with a test one done on Content Consumer. It was a well thought out document on how his girlfriend thought, & how being out of her comfort zone and into something new would work out.

Johnny hadn't noticed the add/remove programs yet, & since he had some success on Google finding what he needed to get his monitors working, heck why not! He tried the help section earlier and type in “dual monitors”, but…
