Snow Leopard screenshots emerge

A few dubious screens from Apple’s upcoming OS X mini-update “Snow Leopard” popped up the other week, but now we’re staring at a full-on collection of shots from the folks at German site Apfeltalk. They seem legit enough, but given the fact that Snow Leopard’s improvements primary are under the hood, there’s not a ton to see.

@ Darkroom,That is where you are incorrect and where you have failed to understand the gist of my post and of software programming. Point updates 10.5.6 and 10.5.7 are the updates for 10.5.6 and 10.5.7. These are big fixes and optimizations to…

nVidia turning it’s GPU’s into “PhysX Physics Processors”

You may not know somebody that bought a PhysX card, but if you’re a PC gamer with a relatively recent NVIDIA card, you’ve already got one. Or, at least, you will soon.A proportion of the 3D card’s power can be given over to running physics, giving those fancy PhysX-style interactions without actually having a specific card for it.

The primary idea NVIDIA was trying to push was Optimised PC - the approach discussed in Rob Fahey's interview with Roy Taylor the other day. The idea being that the traditional PC approach where you buy the fastest PC processor you can…

New MacBook in stores this year?

AppleInsider believes that the MacBook and the MacBook Pro are due for a face-lift, but doesn’t provide specific timing for the new rollout. If Apple follows through, the MacBook will get the most significant overhaul, moving from a plastic chassis to an aluminum one that’s already in place on the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac computers.

At the start of the 21st century, there's no tech outfit more influential than Apple. CNET News.com's Tom Krazit will attempt to make sense of the rumors, hype, products, and people that will shape the future of the company. But…

MPAA Threatens Worlds Premier Usenet Indexer

Newzbin, considered by many to be the internets premier indexer and .nzb provider, is under legal threat from the MPAA. The site, which was the creator of Usenets answer to the .torrent file, will likely have to undergo significant changes in order to appease the movie studios.

Newzbin is considering that it may have to fully automate its operations in order to be totally sure of staying the friendly side of the law - no more human intervention, no more ‘editor’ named reports. No more easily…

Mininova, 5 Billion Downloads and Counting

Today, one of Mininovas users will will have the honor to download the 5 billionth torrent, an impressive figure for a site that has only been around for little over three years. If Mininova continues to grow at this rate, we might see the 10 billionth download before the year ends.

Sorry but i want to ask you something ernesto didn’t you be tired to promote mininova.org, we don’t need one big site but several big sites. i think you need to promote new beginners than big sites. big sites are big enough….

Firefox 3 Ubuntu freeze up workaround

The worst thing about the new 'Fox on ubuntu!

I get random freezes all the time in Gutsy 7.10 AMD64. Seems especially frequent when using Evolution. Looking at Sys Monitor, it appears that my system skips between maxing out one core and then the other. Super frustrating.

Report: AT&T to sell 3G iPhone at $200 discount

Might Apple be ready to formally embrace unlocking with a new iPhone pricing structure at AT&T?

Presumably, AT&T's might come with the glossy black plastic chassis reported by Engadget with some sort of changes to the hardware (perhaps making it thicker) and software to close the loopholes exploited by iPhone hackers….

Microsoft Predicted to Back Away from Vista

“When it comes to technology debacles, every major company has a few (remember the Newton?), but right now one of the top spots has to go to Windows Vista, Microsofts clunky operating system that has IT shops and consumers desperately clutching at XP for as long as they can.”

The Vista backlash found in comment threads attached to blogs, news posts, forums, and such is a result of basically two relatively small and vocal groups of people: 1) the MS-hating Linux crowd going on the offensive with a smear…

http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/05/quake-3-hits-the-ipod-tou

Future generations will most likely divide the timeline of history at this point: when Quake 3 achieved motion-sensing, wireless network play on two iPod touches. Just think, less than a year ago we were salivating (or at least mildly enthused) at the prospect of rocking Doom on this thing, and now Quake 3 Arena is yours for the taking.

Keep dreaming. A game console's revenue stream comes from licensing games. You give a SDK away, you aren't doing much to encourage developers to seek licences and give a company money. Sure, you cover a fair chunk of hardware costs when…

Play Youtube videos from the Totem movie player

GNOMEs Totem Movie Player now includes a plugin for searching and playing YouTube videos without leaving the player, and without Flash. Its installed by default in Ubuntu 8.04, and works fabulously!

There’s a modification to this plugin that will play the H.264 video, you can install its package from this page and enable the YouTube H264 plugin the same way. On recently added videos, the H.264 file looks much better.
