Solar Power goes to Extremes for 5cents per Watt

If a magnifying glass is like lightning to ants, this would be their atomic bomb.

The most recent announcement comes from Sunrgi, which claims its XCPV system will “produce electricity at a wholesale cost of 5-cents per kWh” (via news release). Their system magnifies sunlight 2,000 times at over…

One Bad-Ass Looking Killer Gaming Rig, The Broodling!

The intoxicating smell of fresh paint was the first sensation to greet us when we opened up a very special package from Diamond Multimedia and Smooth Creations. This was quickly followed by jaw-dropping awe as we admired the meticulous detail of the system’s custom paint job. Speculating at the power waiting to be unleashed under its hood, we…

We'll try not to get too much drool or smudged fingerprints on the rig. After all, we're giving it away to a randomly-selected, active HotHardware forum member! This AMD Phenom X4 9750-based system, with a Diamond Radeon HD 3870 X2…

Sony Unveils Ultrasmall Hybrid Fuel Cell for phones

Sony prototyped a fuel-cell system small enough to fit in one hand (50×30mm). It works by combining a fuel cell, a Li-polymer secondary battery, a control circuit and so forth together to output up to 3W of power. Its use efficiency of energy is high enough that 14 hours of 1seg movie can be continuously played by general mobile phones.

The new fuel-cell system is direct methanol type and uses methanol as fuel. Also, it is an active fuel-cell system, which controls fuel supply with a pump. The system is hybrid type with the output supplemented by a Li-polymer…

Is the iPhone Killing the Internet?

If you say that the iPhone is the greatest invention of your lifetime, few would bat an eye. But dare to claim that the iPhone is killing the Internet as we know it, you’d be laughed out of town. But that is the central argument of a new book “The Future of the Internet - and How to Stop It.” Read this interview with the author & hear his argument.

NEWSWEEK: There seem to be a bunch of books coming out attempting to grapple with where the Internet is heading and what it's doing to us. Jonathan Zittrain: I certainly think this is a particularly fertile time to be thinking about the future…

Vista ‘Inevitable’ For Enterprises, says Forrester analyst

Is “resistance futile” or has Forrester lost touch with reality?

The hesitation to bet the bank on Vista was illustrated by a different Forrester report last month. Then, the research firm touted polls that surveyed 50,000 corporate users throughout 2007. The results, said Forrester, showed that Windows XP…

Can we rescue OLPC from Windows?

FSF president Richard Stallman calls on Negroponte and the OLPC project leadership to reject overtures by Microsoft and recognize the importance of free software to its core educational mission. RMS has just started using one as his main machine.

Proprietary software keeps users divided and helpless. Its functioning is secret, so it is incompatible with the spirit of learning. Teaching children to use a proprietary (non-free) system such as Windows does not make the world a…

20 Unusually Brilliant Bookcase and Bookshelf Designs [PICS]

Bookcase Door to Hidden Room: We’ve all seen it in the movies: you pull the book from the shelf and the mysterious door opens into a secret room to the side. Well, this isn’t a mansion in a murder mystery - just…

Air Traffic Controller Sounds Alarm

Doug Church, union spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, says the practitioners of this unsung profession are being hung out to dry. “We’re left trying to hold the system together like MacGyver ? with duct tape and scissors and string.”

We had a labor dispute a couple of years ago that has now transitioned into a safety issue. The FAA had a mandate from Congress to start running things like a business, to be more cost-effective. That has manifested itself in the rise of…

Big Media Continues to Fight Net Neutrality

Big Media has made its deal with broadband ISPs like Comcast to make sure its Internet video gets priority A-1 Express Lane carriage over the Internet. In exchange, they are supporting the ISPs’ fierce opposition to net neutrality rules that would bar them from pushing everyone else’s video into the Bus Lane…

Obviously we need to deregulate the cable delivery monopoly and also open the doors for municipal and Federally funded broadband programs to level the playing field for rural Americans in the future job markets. It would be better to hire rural…
