22-foot tall robot crafted entirely from excess styrofoam

The creature you see standing before you is a 22-foot tall Styrobot constructed entirely from spare polystyrene packing materials, and no, each piece didn’t just show up that way. Michael Salter managed to whittle away on this beast until its completion

Tyrant alarm clock dials your contacts if you refuse to wake

The alarm clock dials a random number in your mobile contact list for every three minutes that you address the obnoxiously loud ringing. Brilliant. Pure, sadistic, barbarous brilliance.

Duh people like to sleep, that's why I'm saying they could get more of it by going to bed at a decent hour. Teachers & Professors give students plenty of time to work on projects, homework, etc., but the students choose not to do them…

Intel says to prepare for ‘thousands of cores’ in processors

Intel is telling software developers to start thinking about not just tens but thousands of processing cores.the chipmaker is now thinking well beyond the traditional processor in a PC or server.”The more cores we have the better. Provided that we can supply memory bandwidth to the device.”

But the chipmaker is now thinking well beyond the traditional processor in a PC or server. Jerry Bautista, the co-director of the Tera-scale Computing Research Program at Intel, recently said that in a graphics-intensive environment…

Wow: AT&T’s text messages cost $1310 per megabyte

When you do the math, it turns out AT&T is charging an ASTRONOMICAL amount for texts when you go over your set amount. Not that we really expect ethical business practices from a company with the Death Star for its logo, but this is ridiculous.

2) I’m not disagreeing with you, but your math is a little off. 160 bytes is the data YOU are sending, but there’s other data that has to go with it. Timestamp, destination, etc. So maybe a text message is 200 bytes. Maybe…

AT&T Announces iPhone 3G pricing plans

Today, AT&T announced the iPhone 3G pricing plans. New customers/upgraders will get their shiny gadget for $199 - $299 (depending on whether you choose the 8 GB or 16 GB model). Early upgraders will have to pay $399 or $499, all with a two year contract and $18 upgrade fee. A no-commitment iPhone will be available for $599 & $699 after the launch.

Wow. These prices are insanely high. Even if you are eligible for the 199/299 prices, you are going to be paying unbelievable amounts per month. The old iPhone is/was $20/month for unlimited data and 200 texts, and this one is $35/month for the…

Things No One Gives Microsoft Credit For (But Should)

Microsoft gets more crap than any other company in tech. That’s partly because it’s given us garbage like Clippy, Microsoft BOB and Windows Vista. And it’s partly because it’s arguably the most important company in personal computing.

I remember the world before DOS, when I had to do everything in CP/M. It sucked, but I hated DOS even more. Then when UIs became graphical, I hated MS even more. However, the brilliant thing they did was license their technology so that anyone…

OFFICIAL: Rogers announces iPhone 3G plans

Unlimited data isn’t one of them…

Let's all be clear, folks: this is not the fault of Rogers. Rogers is just doing what every good monopoly should do, namely royally screwing over their customers. They are a CORPORATION answerable only to their shareholders, and their job is…

Most Powerful Visualization System: Faster than 600 Consoles

What you see here is not a simple array of LCD displays. This is NASA’s hyperwall-2, the world’s highest resolution visualization system. At 23 by 10 feet wide, hyperwall-2 uses 128 screens driven by 128 graphic processing units with a total of 1,024 processor cores capable of displaying quarter billion-pixel graphics. That’s 74 teraflops of power.

Bill Gates Retires Today

June 27th 2008 marks the day that Bill Gates steps out of his role as nerd-baron and into the shoes of full-blown immortal philanthropist. Thank You!

Steve Jobs is pretty arrogant. I could see him donating to charities but not that much.he regularly parks in the handicapped spot at Apple, Inc. I dont think that anyone can deny that he is arrogant and has high demands for perfection. He…

Ten Reasons Why Vista Isn’t That Bad

Of all the ware Microsoft churns out from its sweatshop of “lightning bolt, lightning bolt” nerds, Windows is the one most inexorably tied to the public image of the company. Although we agree that Vista could have used a bit more time shoved back into the silicon womb for some feature buffing and bug fixing, it’s not nearly as bad as people say.

Like I said, even if they outsell every other computer manufacturer in the world, their market share for their OS will never be over 30%, putting windows market share at approx. 70%. Sure they will become more susceptible to viruses the…

Bill Gates is Going to Have One F’ed Up Retirement

Here are nearly 50 Photoshops envisioning Bill Gates in retirement. They range from the hilarious to the mean-spirited to the downright-insane, and are all pretty damned awesome.

Last week, I asked you to create visions of Bill Gates in retirement. You responded. As per usual, the easiest joke had the most entries (this time, it was Bill Gates working at the Apple Store/at the Genius Bar), many of which were left…

Dynamic Tower Skyscraper

Italian architect David Fisher is building his first skyscraper, the Dynamic Tower, and it happens to be one of the most ambitious construction plans since the Pyramid of Khufu. Every floor of the 80-story self-powered building rotates according to voice command, and nearly the entire construction of the $700 million structure is pre-made.

@mumin: Look at the picture of the wind turbines. It shows a 5-bladed turbine between each floor, looking to be about 6 feet high. The stress on each scoop would be huge, so it's made of carbon fibre. The close-up shows a big gap…
