The Supercomputers of Oak Ridge National Lab

“When you buy a computer this large,” Messer said, “You get to pick the color.”

At the tech culture nexus of video games, fire art, Legos, 3D virtual worlds, social networking, aviation, hacked Roombas and much more, CNET News.com's Daniel Terdiman sits with pen, notebook, laptop and camera, chronicling the latest and…

First look: Mozilla Weave 0.2 puts Firefox in the cloud

Mozilla Labs has announced the availability of Weave 0.2, the third major release of its experimental Firefox synchronization add-on. This version brings a broader feature set, improved reliability, and streamlined notification support. Although it is still in the early testing stage, Weave is already effective and easy to use.

Despite its early stage of development, Weave shows a lot of promise. When I discussed future plans for the service with Mozilla Labs manager Chris Beard in March, he informed me that the eventual goal is to transform Weave into an entire…

Preview: CNET’s new, improved look

After more than a dozen years of bringing you our content surrounded by yellow and green, CNET is getting a new look. As you can see below, the carnival of colors is being replaced by a cleaner look that pivots off our updated, red CNET logo and our content.

We had two key goals with this CNET revamp–make the site easier to use and speed it up. Simplicity is the major theme of this design, and that includes the new “pipeless” CNET logo, a more consistent site structure and a…

IBM supercomputer is world’s fastest & most energy efficient

Good news for green tech: The fastest supercomputer in the world is also one of the most energy efficient. In the twice-yearly list of the fastest computers on the planet, IBM has 5 of the top 10 most powerful computers, including the No. 1 spot.

Supercomputing, which pits the highest-end machines against challenges such as forecasting the global climate in coming decades or finding oil reservoirs underground, is a fast-changing field. The Top500 list once again had the most…

New MacBook in stores this year?

AppleInsider believes that the MacBook and the MacBook Pro are due for a face-lift, but doesn’t provide specific timing for the new rollout. If Apple follows through, the MacBook will get the most significant overhaul, moving from a plastic chassis to an aluminum one that’s already in place on the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac computers.

At the start of the 21st century, there's no tech outfit more influential than Apple. CNET News.com's Tom Krazit will attempt to make sense of the rumors, hype, products, and people that will shape the future of the company. But…

Billboards That Secretly Film You… WTF

Some entrepreneurs have introduced equipping billboards with tiny cameras that gather details about passers-by–their gender, approximate age, and how long they looked at the billboard. These details are transmitted to a central database.

Quividi's technology has been used in Ikea stores in Europe and McDonald's restaurants in Singapore, but it has just come to the United States. Another Quividi billboard is in a Philadelphia commuter station with an advertisement for the…

Facebook exec: We’re the Net’s cable company

As you might expect from a vice president of product marketing, Facebook’s Chamath Palihapitiya can deliver a convincing sales pitch.
His sell: Facebook is the next-generation platform of the Internet that can turn any ambitious entrepreneur (with the right application) into an overnight success. He rattled off the stats to back up the argument.

Last year, the company backed up its commitment to developers when it introduced the Facebook Fund (or fbFund), which grants up to $250,000 to promising entrepreneurs without asking for equity. (Facebook worked in partnership with…

CNET Top 5: Worst downloads of 2008 (so far)

2008 is nearly halfway over, which means that poor CNET Download.com senior content manager Peter Butler has reached deeply into the trash heap to pluck out, shake off, and crown with glory the most useless downloads published this year. He's handed the best of the worst over to CNET Executive Editor Tom Merritt for show and tell

Royal Pingdom » Google domain names – the funny, strange and surprising

Google owns a whole bunch of domain names other than the obvious ones like google.com, blogger.com and gmail.com. Here are some of the more noteworthy .com domain names that Google owns.

It is likely that many of these domain names have been registered by Google either to protect their brand, and in some cases to prevent typosquatting and similar practices. Google lawyers have surely been keeping busy reclaiming lots of…

You said you don’t use MySQL, but you’ve downloaded MySQL more than 1,300 times in the last twelve months.

As is demonstrated again and again, enterprises have no idea just how awash in open-source software they are…until they ask. This is absolutely true for MySQL. The only thing missing in that adoption is the enterprise stepping up to pay for some or all of its free-loading adoption of MySQL. Oh, and Google's free-loading, too. …More

Indeed. Now the only thing missing in that conversation is the enterprise stepping up to pay for some or all of its free-loading adoption of MySQL. This is what is prompting MySQL to consider new licensing models. It would be very easily…

The creepiest universal remote. Ever.

Since it’s a robot with some semblance of artificial intelligence, ApriPoko is smart enough to observe how you use your remote control and then ask you questions regarding your actions.
