Microsoft Discontinuing Sales Of XP Operating System

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is pulling the XP operating system from its product line come Monday. The move comes 18 months after the company launched the Vista operating system.

Watchdogs warn of IE 6 flaw

The US Computer Emergency Response Team (US-Cert) said that the flaw lies in the way the browser handles attempted cross-site scripting attacks.
An attacker could execute a cross-domain scripting attack and steal cookies and security credentials without any warning to the user.

McAfee and US-Cert recommend that IE6 users upgrade to the latest version of the browser to avoid infection. Users who do not wish to upgrade are advised to disable scripting.

Technology: It’s Where the Jobs Are

Here’s a hint for high school graduates or college students still majoring in indecision: Put down that guitar or book of poetry and pick up a laptop. Study computer science or engineering, and plan to move to a big city. Technology is where it’s at!

AeA's Kazmierczak says this confirms what its members are saying about their ability to hire new employees. Unable to find enough U.S. citizens for tech jobs, U.S. companies scoop up as many foreign nationals as they can using the limited pool…

Fewer Pursuing Tech Degrees

Fewer college students are pursuing computer-related degrees at a time when demand is increasing and thousands of baby boomers are retiring from technical jobs. The colliding trends have some business leaders worried that they won’t find enough workers needed to maintain expected growth…

Enrollment in undergraduate degree programs in computer sciences is more than 50 percent lower than it was five years ago, the group said. Between 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 the number of new students declaring computer sciences as a major…

Ballmer’s plan: forget Yahoo, let’s go back to the future

Steve Ballmer chats about (not) buying Yahoo, challenging Google, and why he thinks Microsoft’s persistence will pay off. But the perfect storm that served Microsoft so well in the 1990s is nowhere on the horizon.

Ballmer suggested that when Microsoft first evaluated search, it didn't see a profitable market there; he gives Google mad props for showing him that the market existed, saying, "And I give Google credit for innovating in the…

Software Notebook: This Dream Home comes with a Mouse

The Dream Home is a modern-day sequel to the Monsanto House of the Future, a Disneyland attraction from 1957 to 1967. The new Dream Home project, in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, includes some futuristic technology concepts, like its predecessor. Microsoft Surface computers are currently being deployed in commercial settings, so that scenario is

By focusing on current scenarios, the Dream Home also doubles as a subtle promotional vehicle for Microsoft. For example, the dining room table is a collection of Microsoft Surface tabletop computers that display photos and videos when members of…

Linux Threatens Microsoft Monopoly Overseas

Totally ignoring the fact that this type of news is becoming the new norm everywhere but in the US, it does present a very serious question - how does Microsoft compete with free? And not just free as in free of cost, but free as in freedom to either pay for support when needed or use an in-house IT team that has seen the coming change…

Mixed Successes With the Linux Desktop. I've been tracking various regions and their overall Linux adoption rates based on Google/trends, among other more accurate means. My findings have been interesting. In China, India and other parts of…

XP lives! Sort of.

Congratulations Linux. Yesterday was the day you made Microsoft blink. Microsoft has changed its mind and has decided to keep XP Home around after all

What's really happening is that hardware builders are giving Microsoft the cold shoulder, but you know, they won't get rid of the giant of Redmond just right away, far from it. What they're doing is running away from the corner where…

Apple receiving “Electric Computers” that may be 3G iPhones

Upon first glance, what appears to be an intriguing rumor about 3G iPhones will only remain so if beer goggles are used for the second look.

And, if you think "electric computer" is just another way to write "desktop computer," think again. According to the "logic" of the folks at ImportGenius, since "shipments of desktop…

The best desktop OS is…

Windows is getting better, albeit with SP hick-ups, but the Linux desktop is still the best desktop.

To take one example of why I'm in no danger of switching to Windows anytime soon, security continues to be a fundamental problem in any variety of Windows starting with Windows for Workgroups to Vista SP1 and Server 2008. In fact, the newest…

ABC News: Microsoft vs. Yahoo: Winner Is Google?

Microsoft Corp.’s attempt to take over Yahoo Inc. has become so tortured it may help Internet search and advertising leader Google Inc. grow stronger, undermining Microsoft’s main reason for pursing the deal in the first place.

Under this reported scenario, News Corp. would contribute the Internet's top social network, MySpace.com, and some cash in a Yahoo takeover. The proposed deal would put three of the Web's most popular sites — Yahoo, MySpace and…

Increased piracy hurt Microsoft’s quarter

For several quarters, Microsoft has been seeing a drop in piracy rates, which has been helping fuel improved business in its Windows unit. In the just-reported March quarter, however, Microsoft saw an increased rate

During her seven years at CNET News.com, Ina Fried has changed beats several times, changed genders once and covered both of the Pirates of Silicon Valley. These days most of her attention is focused on Microsoft.
