Making the right Linux choice

Linux doesn’t come in a one-size-fits-all release and so making the right decision first time around can be a bit tricky. Here we offer a simple guide to choosing the right version (or “distribution”) of Linux.

Gentoo is not ideal for first time Linux users but is very popular among experienced users. Gentoo uses a packaging system that instead of installing pre-built software, downloads the source files for applications and compiles the software on…

Wall Street becoming Linux stronghold

But even as the Wall Street crowd increasingly puts its money on Linux ? market watcher Tabb Group estimates that Linux adoption among the 14 biggest investment firms this year will reach more than 72% of the installed operating server base vs. 60% in 2006 ? it’s clear concerns linger about the licensing model (due to open source vs IP concerns).

Companies, Developers Contributing To The X Server

X server is a critical part of the Linux desktop, enabling graphical user interfaces. Between 15 hardware and software companies, they had made up about 66% of the total code commits since 1999. But where did the rest come from? The remaining 30~33% of the work can be attributed to independent developers and other less-noticeable companies.

Study: 70 percent say Red Hat more secure than Windows

In a survey conducted by the Standish group, companies say that Linux is more secure than Windows. The study also looks at other key drivers that are motivating open-source adoption, like lower cost and and faster development.

Chinese hackers poised for anti-CNN attack over the weekend

Chinese hackers appear to be readying for an attack on the West scheduled for April 19. The basis of the attack appears to be the recent, and very public, pro-Tibet coverage in Western media organizations.

According to Scott Henderson, administrator for The Dark Visitor, members of The Red Alliance have traditionally required very little in terms of direct motivation to launch politically motivated attacks against external sites. The Dark Visitor…

Introduction to Linux

Easy to read, accurate in plain language. Linux is a free open-source alternative to Windows and Macintosh.

I see a few hands from people who have via a NT system or something similar, but other than that, it is unlikely you've used Add/Remove for anything other than "remove" (though Vista does allow for the user to download…

F-22 Raptor Airframes Falling Apart Due to Bad Glue

According to a just-released Air Combat Command report, 30 of the F-22A Raptors delivered by Lockheed Martin use “inadequate adhesive” in their airframes. That means two things in plain language: bad glue and BIG trouble.

They will be holding a logo contest instead of fighting Red Hat over the similarities of the logo.

[…] After a cease and desist letter from Fedora, we learned our logo was a bit too much like theirs, and rather than waste resources saving the logo and fighting with a company many of us like, it seemed to make more sense to just ask…
