reddit – Trac

We've always strived to be as open and transparent with our users as possible, and this is the next logical step. When we say 'open-source' we mean specifically that the code behind reddit is available to the public for download, and we're inviting the public to submit code to help improve the site.

Reddit is unique in the social news scene in that we have a huge community of developers. It seems only natural that we give you all in that community a chance to contribute back to reddit and make it a better place for everyone. We know…

cursivebuildings

The artist has made old photos and turned them into 3D using gif animation trickery. These are photos from the NY Public Library. The artist says there will be more. They are absolutetly phenomenal to look at. Oddly enough, the first picture is probably the worst. My favorite is the third photo down of the buffalo.

i’m breathing new life into the past using old digitized photographs from the new york public library. i’ve spent hours rekindling these moments. & they will not be the last.

Anatomy of a runaway IT project : Bruce F. Webster

This is the text of an actual memo — carefully redacted — written up after the review of a major IT project that had become a software runaway and which would eventually be abandoned. Count up just how many things the corporation (”BigFirm”) did wrong!

EXAMPLES: [Key process] calculation — the core of BigFirm’s business and profits — was being (and may still be) done incorrectly in FUBAR; it had never been previously checked for correctness through all these…

Software Notebook: This Dream Home comes with a Mouse

The Dream Home is a modern-day sequel to the Monsanto House of the Future, a Disneyland attraction from 1957 to 1967. The new Dream Home project, in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, includes some futuristic technology concepts, like its predecessor. Microsoft Surface computers are currently being deployed in commercial settings, so that scenario is

By focusing on current scenarios, the Dream Home also doubles as a subtle promotional vehicle for Microsoft. For example, the dining room table is a collection of Microsoft Surface tabletop computers that display photos and videos when members of…

Finally, it’s time for Wine

Fifteen years in the making, everyone’s favorite software to run Windows programs on Linux and Unix, Wine, is almost ready for its 1.0 release. If all goes well, Alexandre Julliard, Wine’s lead developer, says that Wine 1.0 should appear on June 20, two weeks after the program’s fifteenth birthday.

According to White in a 2006 NewsForge interview, this forking caused Wine's development to slow down for years. "Historically, the main interest for volunteer Wine developers was games; that was the primary focus for most of…

Boy Scouts of America to fix self-serving open source

How the Boy Scouts will fix everything that doesn’t work with open source: project management, self-serving geeks and even the open source definition.

Since a recent experience with Microsoft got me worried about people using terms out of context, I thought I'd browse through the open source BSA site to find out more. Especially worth reading (and source from most of the quotes) are…

Plurk: The Near-Perfect Lifestreaming Experience Has Arrived

Plurk, the latest lifestreaming service to make the rounds, certainly has one thing going for it - a sense of humor, albeit an odd one. The site is currently riding a wave of new registrations due to a mention from Leo Laporte, but is it worth your time or is it just another Twitter clone with a prettier UI?

The networking options on Plurk are enough to accommodate most people (in theory… in practice I couldn't import a friend list using any of the mechanisms, but it appeared to be a local problem). You can use email contact lists as…
