Introducing the VIA Nano Processor, New Details Emerge

New details have emerged regarding final clock speeds and specifications, performance, branding, and availability of VIA’s Isaiah CPU architecture. Isaiah is now known as the VIA Nano processor and according to the benchmarks it is 1.6x to 3.2x the performance of the C7 clock-for-clock while falling within a similar power envelope.

Although VIA is usually a bit late to the game as far as performance goes, their feature set included with their processors never ceases to amaze me. I remeber when they released the C3 several years ago and showed it playing quake3 without a…

PS3’s Cell CPU tops high-performance computing benchmark

A new research paper takes a look at how a common high-performance computing benchmark performs on a number of multicore, multisocket platforms, including Intel's Clovertown, AMD's Opteron, Sun's Niagara2, and IBM's Cell. Here's a sneak peek: bandwidth-starved systems don't do very well.

But of course, no one should take these remarks as a defense of Intel's currently dated system architecture. Nehalem, with its QuickPath interconnect, NUMA topology, SMT support, and greatly expanded two-level TLB, will take Intel even…

IBM Ships Fastest Chip In Existence

IBM Corp. began shipping high-end computers Tuesday built around the fastest chip on Earth, a microprocessor that can carry out up to 5 billion instructions per second, surpassing the speediest competing processors built by rivals like Intel or Sun Microsystems.

Imagine a long line of airport passengers waiting for the ticket agent to check them in, Azhari said. The IBM speed trick would have that ticket agent working faster and faster - with maybe a blower overhead to cool the agent down. But…

AMD laying off 10% of workforce, cuts revenue estimates

AMD lowered its forecast for first-quarter performance today, and announced that it intends to cut approximately 10 percent of its workforce (1,600-1,700 workers) by the end of the third quarter. The company said that it expects first-quarter revenue to come in at $1.5 billion.

AMD gave no guidance on how its revenue shortfall and job cuts will affect either its next-generation 45nm Shanghai processor or Hector Ruiz's much-publicized plan to return AMD to profitability by the second quarter of this year….

AMD announces tri-core, tweaked quad-core Phenoms CPUs

AMD has formally unwrapped its three-core Phenom X3 8000 series, along with new versions of its existing quad-core Phenom X4 processors, now known as the 9050 line.Interestingly, the The 8650 is 27 per cent faster than the 6000+ at converting an “HD video file” to a mobile screen-sized MPEG 4 file.

AMD also took the wraps off the 2.2GHz 9550, the 2.3GHz 9650, the 2.4GHz 9750 and the 2.5GHz 9850. Like the X3s, these X4s consume up to 95W of power and almost all of them sit on a 3.6GHz HyperTransport bus. The exception is the 9850, which has a…

MacBook Pro teardown reveals… not much

Whenever Apple releases a new product, it doesn’t take long for someone to tear it apart. Before the first flood of reviews, we get a peek inside.

Looking at the two motherboards side by side, the only discernible difference is the additional video RAM chips. Looking closer at the processor, though, you can see that the 45nm Penryn processor is smaller than the 65nm Merom. With virtually…
