The miles per gallon illusion (Miles/gal vs. Gal/mile)

You have a household with two cars, and each needs to be driven 10,000 miles per year. One consumes 34 MPG, and the other consumes 18 MPG. Since gas is expensive, you want to replace one car. You have two choices: Replace the 34 MPG car with a 50 MPG car or Replace the 18 MPG car with a 28 MPG car. Which car replacement would save you the most gas?

It is true that a 10mpg increase from 20-30 is not as good as 10-20. However, it is more difficult to improve the fuel economy of a large vehicle than a small vehicle. lets look at the yukon vs the yukon hybrid. Going from 16 mpg to 21…

Wow: AT&T’s text messages cost $1310 per megabyte

When you do the math, it turns out AT&T is charging an ASTRONOMICAL amount for texts when you go over your set amount. Not that we really expect ethical business practices from a company with the Death Star for its logo, but this is ridiculous.

2) I’m not disagreeing with you, but your math is a little off. 160 bytes is the data YOU are sending, but there’s other data that has to go with it. Timestamp, destination, etc. So maybe a text message is 200 bytes. Maybe…

AT&T Announces iPhone 3G pricing plans

Today, AT&T announced the iPhone 3G pricing plans. New customers/upgraders will get their shiny gadget for $199 - $299 (depending on whether you choose the 8 GB or 16 GB model). Early upgraders will have to pay $399 or $499, all with a two year contract and $18 upgrade fee. A no-commitment iPhone will be available for $599 & $699 after the launch.

Wow. These prices are insanely high. Even if you are eligible for the 199/299 prices, you are going to be paying unbelievable amounts per month. The old iPhone is/was $20/month for unlimited data and 200 texts, and this one is $35/month for the…

Tesla to produce sub $30k electric car!

Tesla is becoming affordable to the “average” consumer.

@chris fredetteI think you are a bit mixed on low volume manufacturing and high volume manufacturing. The Elise SC (0-60 4.4 secs) probably the closest to the Tesla Roadster (0-60 3.9 secs) in performance already costs $55k…

OFFICIAL: Rogers announces iPhone 3G plans

Unlimited data isn’t one of them…

Let's all be clear, folks: this is not the fault of Rogers. Rogers is just doing what every good monopoly should do, namely royally screwing over their customers. They are a CORPORATION answerable only to their shareholders, and their job is…

Nearly Half of IT Workers Snoop in Confidential Files

Nearly half of IT workers have admitted to snooping around networks to look at confidential information, according to research from software firm Cyber-Ark. “When it comes down to it, IT has essentially enabled snooping to happen. It’s easy — all you need is access to the right passwords or privileged accounts and you’re privy to everything that’

The survey also revealed that privileged passwords get changed very infrequently. Thirty percent admitted privileged passwords were only changed every quarter while 9 percent claimed they never changed privileged passwords, giving indefinite…

Ballmer’s plan: forget Yahoo, let’s go back to the future

Steve Ballmer chats about (not) buying Yahoo, challenging Google, and why he thinks Microsoft’s persistence will pay off. But the perfect storm that served Microsoft so well in the 1990s is nowhere on the horizon.

Ballmer suggested that when Microsoft first evaluated search, it didn't see a profitable market there; he gives Google mad props for showing him that the market existed, saying, "And I give Google credit for innovating in the…

$500 for 5 feet of Ethernet cable?

Parts of the blogosphere have been buzzing over the discovery of a 1.5-meter Ethernet cable that is being sold for the insane price of $499. The cable would cost you $4 elsewhere. The manufacturer is Denon, and the target customer is the “audio enthusiast.” Apparently “audio enthusiast” is Denonese for “sucker.”

“Denon's 1.5 meter (59 in.) ultra premium Denon Link cable was designed for the audio enthusiast. Made from high purity copper wire and high performance connection parts, the AK-DL1 will bring out all the nuances in digital…

Cadence wants to buy Mentor for $1.6B

“Cadence is stressing that its all-cash proposal represents a 30% premium over the $12.33 closing price of Mentors stock on June 16, the last trading day prior to public disclosure of the proposal but is this the best thing for the industry? Analysts are predicting the fight will get ugly, really quickly.”

As Bill and I explained to you on May 2, based upon our knowledge of Mentor Graphics from currently available public information, Cadence is prepared to acquire Mentor Graphics for $16.00 per share in cash. Our proposal is not subject to any…

The iPhone Price Drop is a Lie

You probably heard that the iPhone was dropped to $199. What you probably didn't hear is that you pay an extra $240 over two years in “increased” data plan costs. So what do you end up paying? $439 for the low end model. That doesn't sound like a price drop to me.

It also raises a question about the future of unlocking the iPhone to use on other networks. In the past, unlocking has not hurt Apple, since they still reaped the full price of the iPhone's sale. And since unlocked iPhones have typically been…
