BitTorrent Seed Farmer found guilty, faces 10 years in jail

A jury has convicted EliteTorrents admin Daniel Dove of conspiracy and felony copyright infringement. Since the MPAA supplied much of the evidence for the case (saving law enforcement time and labor), both parties are likely to continue “collaborating” to take file sharers down.

According to the DoJ, the jury was presented with evidence that Dove was in charge of a small group (known as the "Uploaders"), recruiting members with high-speed Internet connections to seed illegal content to the…

MPAA: Actual P2P Distribution often “impossible” to prove

The Motion Picture Association of America tells the judge in the Jammie Thomas case that making a song available on a P2P network should count as infringement; proving that actual distribution took place is “often very difficult” and even “impossible.”

At the time of the Jammie Thomas trial, Thomas was found liable for $9,250 in damages per song for a collection of 24 songs that she made available online, for a total of $222,000 in total damages. Since there was no direct way to know if anyone…

MPAA Says It Doesnt Need Evidence to Convict Pirates

Only a few weeks ago, a University of Washington study showed showed how inaccurate the MPAA and RIAAs evidence gathering techniques are. Now, instead of improving their pirate chasing tactics, the MPAA simply claims they dont need any evidence to bankrupt alleged? copyright infringers.

The fact that the MPAA can now practically do anything they want is totally pointless and crazy… that can’t be let going, they could sue anyone for uploading whatever they say, just to get their cash, because they are too dumb…

MPAA Threatens Worlds Premier Usenet Indexer

Newzbin, considered by many to be the internets premier indexer and .nzb provider, is under legal threat from the MPAA. The site, which was the creator of Usenets answer to the .torrent file, will likely have to undergo significant changes in order to appease the movie studios.

Newzbin is considering that it may have to fully automate its operations in order to be totally sure of staying the friendly side of the law - no more human intervention, no more ‘editor’ named reports. No more easily…

BitTorrent Tracker Insider Infiltrates Anti-Piracy Lobby

Anti-piracy oufits have gained access to private BitTorrent trackers before, but the opposite has never happened, until now. Over the past few weeks, Unnar Geir, spokesperson of The Viking Bay?, successfully infiltrated the Icelandic equivalent of the MPAA (SM??S), and gathered some valuable information that the tracker can use in its defense.

I believe that staying “undercover” for any longer wouldnt do any good, as we have most of the information we needed, and we also believe that talking about how we got it is both really fun, and does not hurt our cause, though…

Pirate Bay: MPAA’s $15.4 million damage claim a fabrication

The MPAA has asked a Swedish court for $15.4 million in damages from The Pirate Bay. Peter Sunde, the torrent tracker's fearless captain, says that the claims are bogus.

The unflappable Sunde isn't impressed with the claims. He told Swedish newspaper SvD that the figure is a fabrication and that the content industry should be thanking him instead of attempting to sue him. "We might be able to pay…

Torrentspy won’t pay $111m "Hollywood publicity stunt" court order

A day after a U.S. judge dinged TorrentSpy with one of the largest fines in copyright history, the lawyer for the torrent-tracking search engine said Thursday the $111 million judgment won't get paid.

But how much does Hollywood owe Torrentspy for increased DVD sales - due to the try before you buy mentality of the US consumer? . In the US, BRAND SPANKING NEW DVDs cost $19 on average. A sandwich, chips and a drink costs about that at most…

isoHunt tells judge it’s just another search engine

The admins of isoHunt are fighting a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by the MPAA, arguing that it and other BitTorrent tracker sites should be treated no differently than a search engine. After all, isoHunt only provides links to content'just like Google.

No matter which way the ruling goes, this could prove to be an important milestone for the MPAA's fight against BitTorrent sites. The MPAA has a few notches in its bedpost, but those have come from settlements which resulted in shuttered…

TorrentSpy Slapped with $110 Million Judgement

TorrentSpy has been ordered to pay a $110 million fine by a federal judge in Los Angeles. The BitTorrent site was found guilty on the charges of copyright infringement of several movie studios represented by the MPAA.

The worse part is, they actually see this as a big win, not as another nail in their coffin because no matter how many sites go down, or if they even managed to shut down every torrent site on the planet, the millions of users who have gotten the…

isoHunt and MPAA Debate Legality of BitTorrent Sites

The legality of BitTorrent sites has always been highly debated. As of today, no court has ever ruled that a website offering .torrent links is legal or not. This might change soon, as isoHunt and the MPAA once again clash in court.

In most places its legal to buy a bong. The head shop doesnt get taken to court of some dude gets arrested using it to smoke pot does it? Just because ’some’ people use bittorrent for illegal file sharing does not mean that…

Oops! MPAA lawsuit gives free publicity to torrent site

The MPAA has sued yet another website for facilitating copyright infringement and profiting from it. Little-known Pullmylink.com now joins the lengthy list of services that have been sued by the MPAA, and the organization shows no signs of letting up.

The reason the MPAA believes that pullmylink.com is "profiting" from providing these links is because it serves ads on its page. The organization says that pullmylink.com has 12,000 unique daily visitors generating some 39,000…

BitTorrent use soars as MPAA fights on against P2P sites

The MPAA has been hard at work trying to sue sites like The Pirate Bay out of existence, while attempting to convince ISPs to block access by users. The efforts have yet to have the desired effect, as BitTorrent traffic is up drastically so far this year.

The downside to high-profile actions against P2P sites is that they act as free publicity. The Pirate Bay bragged that after a Danish ISP was forced to block its subscribers from accessing the Swedish site, traffic spiked. TPB attributes the…

Norwegian ISPs Refuse MPAA’s Request to Disconnect Pir

After being blown off by the Norwegian police, MPAA lawyer Espen T?ndel is now demanding that ISPs disconnect Norwegian file-sharers from the Internet. According to IKT Norway, an interest group for ISPs, the lawyer has sent a letter to Norwegian ISPs on behalf of The Norwegian branch of the MPAA.

And something that I think should be mention, an executive in one of the big ISP’s in Norway said something like this: “You can’t hold a waterprovider (water to your house) responsible if the consumer are…
