Linux cluster stuffed in an Ikea filing cabinet

People have been stuffing PCs in all kinds of things they don’t belong in for a while now, but this Linux cluster creatively packed into an Ikea Helmer filing cabinet might be the first time we’ve seen furniture actually modded into a useful case.

Rated at 200GFLOPS, but do any real programs ever managed to reach this ? Folding@home manages to run 20-30 GFLOPS on a PS3. Is it possible to reach more? You can get much higher with GPUs, nearly in the TFLOP region, but anyone ever wrote a…

BitTorrent Shrugs Off Massive Malware Attack

Described as One of the most prevalent pieces of malware in the last three years,? the Downloader-UA.h trojan is running wild on P2P networks. But thanks to its system strength - and the work of torrent site moderators - such outbreaks are shrugged off by BitTorrent.

I use shareaza for some of my downloads and I see these things all the time. There is usually 15-20 different files that pop up in any type of search, and I mean any search. If you do a search for say, Matt, some of the first and best hosted…

You said you don’t use MySQL, but you’ve downloaded MySQL more than 1,300 times in the last twelve months.

As is demonstrated again and again, enterprises have no idea just how awash in open-source software they are…until they ask. This is absolutely true for MySQL. The only thing missing in that adoption is the enterprise stepping up to pay for some or all of its free-loading adoption of MySQL. Oh, and Google's free-loading, too. …More

Indeed. Now the only thing missing in that conversation is the enterprise stepping up to pay for some or all of its free-loading adoption of MySQL. This is what is prompting MySQL to consider new licensing models. It would be very easily…

Apturl: Install software by clicking a link in Ubuntu!

Imagine the next time you are trying reading a great list of Ubuntu programs. One of them catches your eye, and you want to try it. Instead of either using Add/Remove or opening a terminal to install the program, you simply click a link.

Hopefully that worked! Now before everyone starts complaining of how “insecure” this is, consider this. All that is really being done is apt-get is being told what program to install. So a “malicious”…

Microsoft threatens to get more aggressive with Yahoo

No more Mr. Nice Microsoft. Apparently when Microsoft puts $44.6 billion on the line, it really means it, and the company just sent an open letter to Yahoo’s board of directors stating in no uncertain terms that the 62% premium over Yahoo’s closing price on January 31, 2008 was more than fair.

I just don't get one thing. If Microsoft can spend $44 bnto buy yahoo, WHY NOT spending it to improve your own service and make it a killer. For half this amount they could launch their own services. I think MS people are idiots..they should…

CEO of coComment Goes Through Uncomfortable Interview

CEO of coComment was put under the spotlight about Government Censorship in a recent Interview. Read the middle of the interview where he gets quite uncomfortable explaining himself.

Matt: No not necessarily; because you can bring people in the conversation using a range of third-party tools such as Twitter but I think what makes a great conversation the first thing is the topic should be something that the audience is…

Teenage Hacker Is Blind, and in the Crosshairs of the FBI

the FBI thinks it has identified the culprit in the Colorado swatting as a 17-year-old East Boston phone phreak known as “Li’l Hacker.”

It's as though the phone companies — which enjoy notoriously close relations with the feds — are so adept at getting their hackers arrested that they're little motivated to spend money securing their sprawling…

Vote for the 2007 Engadget Awards!

We're creeping up on the Oscars, which means it must also be time for you to vote in the 2007 Engadget Awards! Based on your nominations (and a couple of our own) we've compiled a list of over 150 gadgets and technologies that made 2007 the blockbuster year it was for consumer electronics.

I'm not an Apple fanboy (Apple is as bad as Microsoft when it comes to overcharging for the products they sell)…but I'd have to say yes, I'd choose the new Mac desktop over the Blackbird. I do not want a Dufflepud…

Quickorder app to keep iPod touch owners hooked on Starbucks

Quickorder, as you can probably imagine, would enable iPod touch users to swing by their local Starbucks, order up their favorite drink and avoid a good deal of that always questionable human interaction.

Starbucks isn’t about coffee. It is a confectionery shop using coffee as a base. Cream, maple syrup, flavor ’shots’ and oversized servings are slowly killing their customers. It’s as bad for you as a regular big mac diet and it is…
