Making the switch … back!

Why “thinking different” is thinking linux.

You touched on similar feelings to mine. I’ve played with Mac OSX on multiple occasions, and found it extremely resistive. It’s very pretty, it’s clean, and little zippier, but in some ways more clumsy. I found…

Mark Shuttleworth on Netbooks pre-loaded with Ubuntu

Mart Shuttleworth discusses Canonical’s new Ubuntu Netbook Remix: goals, design decisions, license, project status, relations to OEM’s and… “Were also working with two companies that want more radical user interface innovation.”

We specifically wanted to do this project as an Ubuntu Remix - based on standard Ubuntu 8.04 packages, with modified package selection and some additional code, but leaving the core platform packages unmodified. In terms of the trademark…

The first release candidate of the hotly-anticipated openSUSE 11.0 is here! Help give 11.0 the all-important last minute testing!

By the way, have enjoyed using Suse 10.3 here in Australia! Looking forward to the new version! Such a fantastic OS. My hopes are to one day switch 100% to Linux and Suse would be my choice. I wish there were a more simple, straight forward…

GNOME file manager gets tabbed file browsing

Support for a tabbed user interface in the Nautilus file manager is a feature frequently requested by users of the GNOME desktop environment. It’s finally here and you can try it yourself.

Christian Neumair finally started working on adding tabs earlier this year. The feature is now almost completely implemented and needs only a little bit more polish and testing before it is ready for widespread use. The work is being done in the…

Six Annoyances in Hardy Heron Ubuntu

“Im a huge fan of Ubuntu Linux. Ive used many flavors of Linux over the years, and Ubuntu is my favorite by far. So it pains me to write this. For my needs, Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) is worse than 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).”

I’m giving my raw perspective as a user, and the upshot is that Hardy Heron feels like a step backwards on the things that matter to me. If I were a GNOME/Ubuntu/Canonical dev, my first reaction would be to leave a comment that says…

Kubuntu KDE4 In-Depth Review: An Ubuntu User’s View

With the release of KDE4 it might be worth taking a second look at Kubuntu. A long time Ubuntu user gives an in depth analysis of how the latest Kubuntu release stacks up against Ubuntu and where the Intrepid Ibex release might be taking us.

Another thing I noticed was that the KDE window manager KWin has some nice options that just aren’t present in Gnome. (and a few that are but that I never knew about because they aren’t configurable so I’d never…

This week’s release of Hardy Heron, an Ubuntu release, offers a freer, more productive space for work and play than ever before. We’re shining the spotlight on a few great tools and tweaks that make Heron a worthy switch

Openoffice doesn't even come near to cutting it. by qbix at 09:35 AM Reply by Email * Installing it in a fakeRAID setup is still a huge hassle. I can't believe they haven't implemented native support for this. Oh well, I guess SP3 is…

WebKit rising

WebKit, originally Apple’s fork of the KHTML project, is becoming increasingly popular. It is used not only by Safari, but also in Android, Adobe AIR, and some Nokia software. Epiphany, the GNOME browser, recently announced that it will be using WebKit, and Konqueror is moving to WebKit. This article discusses the rising popularity of WebKit.

I think people are easily confused by the .NET vs C# vs Winforms vs etc etc. Microsoft doesn't make it easy, seeing how they are monolythic about everything, but Mono as it's used in Gnome is the language that is used to make .NET. As long…

Enable Metacity Compositing in GNOME 2.22

In GNOME 2.22, included in Ubuntu 8.04, the default Metacity window manager has compositing built in. This means that you can get your eye candy effects without switching window managers, even without accelerated graphics!

After enabling it the animations were slow and jerky, whereas they are much faster in Compiz. I’ll be sticking with Compiz for now. I enjoy the fact, though, that everyone is jumping on the compositing bandwagon (now that KDE and…
