Rumor: .Mac relaunch to coincide with iPhone 2.0?

According to our anonymous tipster, .Mac will undergo a complete revamp that will coincide with the iPhone 2.0 launch (which everyone expect to occur at WWDC 08).

Taken from the transcript of the interview with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs at the D5 conference on May 30, 2007.Walt Mossberg (addressing Steve Jobs): You obviously have a very large Internet business with iTunes and you sell a lot of stuff…

Flipping the Linux switch: Cairo-Dock is pain free eye candy

It’s a weird phenomenon. Nearly every computer platform steals another one’s look. Vista gets accused of trying to look too much like OS X. Linux desktops get accused of trying to look like Vista (except when they’re accused of ripping off OS X). There is the Avant Window Navigator, and though it does the trick quite nicely.

Right, which is why I said that x86 installs are fairly straightforward, and you click on the .deb files. However, as stated (at the paragraph starting: A 64-bit OS makes it a little stickier), a 64 bit version of Ubuntu will NOT run an…

Rumor: Comcast Considering Monthly Data Caps,Overage Fees

Other than Time Warner’s single-city foray into monthly data caps, consumption-based billing has mostly been little ISPs with little monopolies, and given the market, we thought it’d stay that way. Broadband Reports is, uh, reporting that now Comcast is mulling monthly caps?something in the 250GB range, and then $1.50 for every GB over that.

One word: Verizon. JadoJodo at 01:44 AM Reply by Email * My ISP started doing this as well. It was recently bought out by Digis in Boise, Idaho. I called to complain about slow speeds and they offered to move me to a “new” plan offered…

Flickr find: 1Password icon shows up in the strangest places

If you’re an independent Mac software developer, having a wicked cool icon for your application is both a blessing and a curse. Users will remember you for the sleek, Leopard-ready goodness of your icon … and other unscrupulous marketers will rip you off shamelessly to promote their own products, rather than ponying up for an original design.

What really gets my fur up is that if you are going to rip something off, at least have the decency to make it look good. The window on the box is “tilted” inwards, the 1Password icon is “flat”, and the entire box is…

It’s a Great Time to Sue Yahoo

Yesterday was like Christmas for securities lawyers and activist Yahoo shareholders. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer walked away from his $40-plus billion offer on Saturday; shares plunged on Monday; and Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang was widely criticized for acting out of self interest — and not on the behalf of shareholders.

Jackson, 35, isn't a longtime Yahoo shareholder, though. Nor has he ever managed a publicly traded company. During the last dot-com bubble, he was in school. In fact, it's hard to see what practical experience he has that could be…

Breeding toxins from dead PCs

Thousands of discarded computers from western Europe and the US arrive in the ports of west Africa every day, ending up in massive toxic dumps where children burn and pull them apart to extract metals for cash.
“Ghana is increasingly becoming a dumping ground for waste from Europe and the US,” according to Mike Anane…

Six years ago the EU produced the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) directive, which introduced new curbs and restrictions on the movement of e-waste. The directive, which came into effect in Britain in January last…

New Boston Apple Store Largest In the World

Later this month, Apple is opening its latest flagship store on Boylston Street in Boston. The store’s main claim to fame? It’s huge. We’re talking largest Apple Store in the world, by square footage.

I think NY thinks everyone has an inferiority complex. by Jordan Golson at 02:37 PM on 05/05/08 Reply by Email * @Dearhaw: No inferiority-complex in that comment. Nope. None. by mordecaidrake at 02:39 PM on 05/05/08 Reply by Email * Lame,…

100 E-mail Bouncebacks? You’ve Been Backscattered

The bounceback e-mail messages come in at a trickle, maybe one or two every hour. The subject lines are disquieting: “Cyails, Vygara nad Levytar,” “UNSOLICITED BULK EMAIL, apparently from you.”

But the problem would largely disappear if server administrators configured their mail servers to immediately reject mail that is sent to nonexistent users, rather than accepting it and then bouncing it back to the faked addresses. Some ISPs…

Exclusive Video: Babbage’s Mechanical Calc. Comes to Life

Charles Babbage completed plans for an elaborate, all-mechanical calculator in 1849. His Difference Engine #2 was so complicated, with more than 8,000 separate parts, that it was never built during his lifetime. But now, Babbage's Difference Engine is on display in Silicon Valley…and it works!

Clearing up some misconceptions: the engine was not built in Babbage's lifetime, as it says in the text. This is the second one ever built. Myhrvold is a donor because he donated the cost of building a printer for the first engine (the one…
