Entertainer 0.1 released!

Entertainer aims to be a simple and easy-to-use media center solution for the Gnome and XFce desktop environments. Today the project reached its first major milestone with the release of version 0.1. The code base is still rather crude and some functionality is yet to be implemented. Check it out and see what you think!

Building a glossier front end for MythTV

Josh Stewart loves MythTV — so much so that he is building his own front-end app for it as a drop-in replacement for MythTV’s default. The replacement is called Gloss, and although it isn’t ready for prime time yet (no pun intended), its OpenGL effects and GStreamer bindings show plenty of promise.

DirecTV DVR clampdown: a sober reminder of DRM suckitude

DRM giveth, and taketh away. That’s the message from DirecTV, which in bowing to Hollywood, has now made its DVR customer’s experience lamer. And best of all, this new use of DRM has nothing to do with piracy and everything to do with making money.
