Absolutely No Possibility of Disconnecting File-Sharers

Virgin Media, plagued by a recent flurry of bad publicity thanks to its policy of working with the music industry to warn file-sharers, has announced today that there is absolutely no possibility? that it will disconnect its users from the Internet or hand over their details to the music industry.

Virgin Media has also stated that it will not hand over the personal details of anyone accused by the BPI “under any circumstances”. This is a good start by Virgin and all credit to them for taking this stance but the reality…

Surprise Desktop Linux Move: Xandros Buys Linspire

Xandros, the oldest desktop Linux vendor and the provider of Asus’ Eee computer Linux is buying Linspire, another desktop Linux distributor.

Carmony, who has since switched to Ubuntu for his Linux needs, went on, This will end up being a completely insignificant event for Linspire shareholders, and the end for Linspire customers. I predict this was done to: 1) help Robertson…

The Horror: iPhone Runs Windows XP

Citrix used its thin client technology to demonstrate an Apple iPhone running Windows XP, at the recent Citrix Application Delivery Conference in Melbourne.

I don't understand what you mean by 'think bios'I know I'm arguing semantics here, but I'd like to think that the media (IT media, no less) would at least get things right. Speaking from a career in PC and embedded…

How to harvest solar power? Beam it down from space!

The satellites would electromagnetically beam gigawatts of solar energy back to ground-based receivers, where it would then be converted to electricity and transferred to power grids. The floating power plants could provide round-the-clock clean, renewable electricity.

Apple Tries To Move Into Your Living Room

A lot of us carry a little bit of Steve Jobs around in our pocket, in the form of iPods and iPhones. Now, Apple is after the remaining bit of life-share that it doesnt already own, the home front.

The movie industry has always wanted to maintain custody of the user experience — in the theater, on home video and on television, which is why you once had to wait for Easter every year to watch “Ben Hur” on the…

Does Ballmer Need To Go?

Microsofts dramatic decision this weekend to withdraw its offer for Yahoo and not pursue a hostile bid raises a whole host of questions. What happens to Yahoo now? What happens to Microsoft? Or is this just a tactic to drive down the price of Yahoos shares so that Microsoft can go hostile with a lower offer? does ballmer need to go?

Google, a company with a monopoly in search, should have just stood by and watched the trains either come together or pass each other on the rails. Instead, they immediately started talking with its competitor about how to thwart a deal with the…

ABC News: Microsoft vs. Yahoo: Winner Is Google?

Microsoft Corp.’s attempt to take over Yahoo Inc. has become so tortured it may help Internet search and advertising leader Google Inc. grow stronger, undermining Microsoft’s main reason for pursing the deal in the first place.

Under this reported scenario, News Corp. would contribute the Internet's top social network, MySpace.com, and some cash in a Yahoo takeover. The proposed deal would put three of the Web's most popular sites — Yahoo, MySpace and…

Microsoft Hires Lobbyists to Clinch Yahoo Takeover

Microsoft Corp. has yet to convince Yahoo Inc. to agree to a friendly takeover, but the software company is already hiring lobbyists to help it convince regulators to let the deal ? hostile if it has to be ? go through.

Microsoft announced the unsolicited offer of $31 per share, or more than $40 billion, in February for slumping Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo, which rejected the initial bid and is seeking alternatives. Options include an experimental…

China could squash Microsoft-Yahoo deal

As if Microsoft’s attempt to buy out Yahoo wasn’t in enough hot water, here comes more trouble: A new Chinese antimonopoly law, slated to take effect in August, could end up killing the deal.

In addition, as the Times points out, "the Chinese have in recent years become more and more alert to the role the Internet plays in their economic and political affairs." So any deal involving the Internet will most likely come…

Europe Approves Google’s Merger With DoubleClick

European regulators approved Googles $3.1 billion takeover of the online advertising company, the final hurdle to a deal that would strengthen Googles already powerful position on the Web.

The commission said Google and DoubleClick “were not exerting major competitive constraints on each other’s activities and could, therefore, not be considered as competitors,” and even if DoubleClick could become an…
