Gnip: Grand Central Station for the Social Web - ReadWriteWeb

Could this be the beginning of data feeds for AI? Taking feeds from all social networks and consolidating them into a common protocol?

No doubt Google is already indexing most of the information that Gnip will be transmitting, but we can't help but think that Gnip will be in a uniquely powerful position to do some mining of anonymized user data and social graphs. That could…

MySpace Opens Up The Data Pipe With Full Launch Of Data Availability

Developers can access any publicly available profile data from a MySpace user and integrate it into their site. This includes a users name, picture, bio, social graph (list of friends), and other information. Users authorize the data transfer via a one-time secure OAuth login to MySpace from the third party service.

this isn’t really a step forward Mike. Email addresses aren’t accessible by third-party developers, and even if they were, they can’t be stored. Shouldn’t the user be able to say “I want to…

Data Portability: Its The New Walled Garden

The scuffle today between Facebook and Google has very little to do with user privacy and everything to do with user control. A huge battle is underway between Google, MySpace and Facebook around control of user profiles and, therefore, users themselves.

Microsoft launches new open standards, interoperability push

Microsoft is embracing open standards and interoperability in a major way, announcing a set of new interoperability principles and a commitment to support open standards. The company is also promising not to sue open-source developers for using its protocols in noncommercial development.

The European Union has also dinged Microsoft for poor interoperability and standards support. Part of the €497 million fine levied against the company in 2004 was due to the company's unwillingness to license and, later, inability…

Red Hat Sends C&D to DataPortability.org…Over Its Logo

Ok, so if those look alike it’s because they all use the symbol for infinity. Red Hat isn’t going to claim to own the symbol for infinity, is it? A request for comment hasn’t been responded to yet, we’ll see if the company has anything more to say. Meanwhile, a discussion concerning how to respond has begun. . .

Just one comment - perhaps this will be useful to some legal department out there. It's not clear that RedHat has a good argument, but if you were to give them the benefit of the doubt that there is some foundation to their concern about…
