Flash on Linux no longer breaks webpages

“There’s a new beta for Flash Player 10 (Astro) available for Windows, Mac, and — you guessed it — Linux.” Drop-down menus, like the one on Adobe’s webpages, can now properly overlay Flash animations in both Firefox and Opera. There’s also better camera support, better language support and speed and stability improvements.

Performance seems to got better too. More instances of the plugin seem to have a lower impact in performance. Webcam had no improvement in my setup. I tested it with Kopete just to be sure everything was ok, the webcam is working fine with it….

40% of surfers don’t bother with browser security updates

A new collaborative study between Google, IBM, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology suggests that users are slower to move between product updates than they should be?especially those using Internet Explorer. The researchers believe that browsers could learn from the food industry, of all things.

The group of researchers includes several of their own suggestions for improving browser security. Firefox and Opera are both credited for including an auto-update feature, but the team notes that "Firefox’s auto-update…

Color management tweak in Firefox 3

You do this by typing “about:config” in the address bar of Firefox 3. Click thru confirmation page and find: gfx.color_management.enabled. Double click that until it says “true”. Then restart Firefox 3.

Actually, it does make a difference, but only if the images you're viewing have a specific color space defined, probably created using a workflow that included color management with a calibrated monitor. The idea (for the web) is to…

Linux.com: Opera 9.5 gives Firefox 3 a run for its money

Two of the most popular Linux browsers were unveiled this month after years of development — the open source Firefox 3 and the proprietary Opera 9.5 … But Opera 9.5 is no less revolutionary than Firefox, matching its open source rival feature for feature

The producers view: Firefox 3

Firefox 3.0 improved supports for HTML5, CSS3, SVG, etc.. but the definitions are still not fully supported. The new version of Gecko improves on Javascript 2 compatability and adds better support for XUL applications, but we’re looking for a version with more native integration XHR (XMLHttpRequest)

Speaking of those updates, I’m looking forward to Firefox 3.1, code-named Shiretoko, which will be rolled out by the end of 2008. (You can download alpha 1 today.) This version of the browser will have more support for CSS3…

Why You Should Download Firefox 3 Right Now

Firefox 3 ? available for download at 10am PDT Tuesday ? is the culmination of a two-year quest to build the best browser ever. And while its not perfect, it comes pretty close.

It’s a small enhancement, but it’s a noticeable one that many users will welcome. Older versions of Firefox were dressed in the same gray clothes no matter which operating system you ran. In Firefox 3, each OS gets its own skin…

Webmonkey Picks - Webmonkey

When Mozilla vice president of engineering Mike Schroepfer visited us in May, he addressed the critical balance between a fast and light browser and a slow but feature-rich one by claiming Firefox 3s extension system enabled his team to take a hands-off approach.
