Our goal is to keep enough slack around to handle surges of unpredictable batch operations, but not enough so it drains our bank account. We’ve settled on an average of roughly 25% of excess compute capacity available when averaged…

Sun Microsystems is getting ready to talk about its cloud computing efforts, including some kind of a deal with Amazon for its Amazon Web Services, according to CEO Jonathan Schwartz, who delivered a short keynote at Startup Camp in San Francisco.

When I asked him about that decision and how it weighed on him, Schwartz turned the question back on me. My response, I suppose, as a capitalist, are that tough decisions come as part of doing business. That kind of attitude, Jonathan said, leads…

Who Are The Biggest Users of Amazon Web Services? It’s Not Startups.

Amazon loves to talk about its Web Services because it positions the company as a bold innovator bringing cloud computing to the unwashed masses and other companies still stuck in the land of legacy data centers. But it is coy when it comes to details about the actual business behind Amazon Web Services, which includes its S3 storage service…

This is not a big surprise to me. Last year sometime, at some random geeky event, I was explaining why I thought AWS was so cool, and one of the people I was explaining it to worked for a local insurance company, and he got very excited….

Top 10 Last.fm Mashups - ReadWriteWeb

Last.fm is generally acknowledged to be one of the best web apps of this era - its music recommendation system literally creates a personalized radio station for you. Well, Last.fm also has an API that is used by many external services to add value and enjoyment for end users.

This service generates a tag cloud of artists similar to the one you’ve input, based on Audioscrobbler data. I generally don’t find such tag clouds to be overly useful, because music is very subjective - e.g. Bryan Adams isn’t very…
