Cory Doctorow: How to stop your inbox exploding

Some obvious, and some not so obvious, hints to keep your email in check.

Many of us are obliged to join up to mailing lists for social or work or family reasons, even though most of the messages are irrelevant to us — for example, a list for planning an annual event in which you play some small part. Resigning…

The ABCs of securing your wireless network: Page 1

Sometimes you don't need to know everything about wireless to secure a home or home-office network; you only need to know what's important.

Ars Technica's original Wireless Security Blackpaper was first published back in 2002, and in the intervening years it has been a great reference for getting the technical lowdown on different wireless security protocols. As a sequel to…

Can we rescue OLPC from Windows?

FSF president Richard Stallman calls on Negroponte and the OLPC project leadership to reject overtures by Microsoft and recognize the importance of free software to its core educational mission. RMS has just started using one as his main machine.

Proprietary software keeps users divided and helpless. Its functioning is secret, so it is incompatible with the spirit of learning. Teaching children to use a proprietary (non-free) system such as Windows does not make the world a…

AT&T to cut the price of Apple’s new iPhone

AT&T is planning to put some extra shine on the even sleeker new Apple iPhone.
When the 3G iPhone is introduced this summer, AT&T, the exclusive U.S. iPhone sales partner with Apple, will cut the price by as much as $200, according to a person familiar with the strategy.

It’s a bit misleading to say that the iPhone has a “higher priced data and calling plan” because readers might think that the iPhone voice+data plan costs more than other voice+data plans, when what you are…

Judge Deals Another Blow to RIAA’s Copyright Theory

One of the pillars of the RIAA’s legal campaign has been its assertion that making a file available for download equates to copyright infringement under the copyright act. A judge has resoundingly rejected the RIAA’s theory that making a file available over a P2P network constitutes copyright infringement.

EFF staff attorney Fred von Lohmann hailed the ruling as a "big victory," saying that the judge delivered the "most decisive rejection yet" of the RIAA's making available theory. In the four cases that…

How the Media Abandoned the Environment

No, youre not imagining things. With U.S. gasoline prices edging toward $4.00 a gallon; oil prices at an all-time high, demand for materials such as copper outstripping demand; worldwide food shortages; major cities running short on water … youd think the environment would be front-and-center on the evening news. And youd be wrong.

All this is happening at a time of unparalleled progress in environmental technology and business. Corporations have genuinely embraced sustainability as a necessary component of profitability. The CleanTech and green collar sector is roaring…

With Cray, Intel seeks greater supercomputer share

Cray and Intel unveiled a multiyear deal to build the next generation of high-performance computers capable of processing petaflops — quadrillions of machine instructions a second — or twice the power of the world’s top existing supercomputer.

More than 70 percent of the top 500 supercomputers are Intel-based, up from about half two years ago, he said, citing industry data. Its main rivals in that segment of the chip market are IBM (IBM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) with its…

MacBook Air hacked with internal EV-DO — finally lives up to its name

One of the most surprising things about the launch of an ultra-portable laptop dubbed “Air” by Apple wasn't it's thinness but the lack of an embedded WWAN radio. No more, at least if you're not intimidated by smoldering solder and warranty violations. Jordan Bunnell has posted a step-by-step of his success at integrating a Verizon USB727 Aircard.

agreed. i think linux is the best choice for schools, actually. it's free, it's already pretty far along with usability — i would say that ubuntu takes a reasonably knowledgeable person to properly set up but any stupid joe can…
