Sony BMG’s hypocrisy: company busted for using warez

Sony BMG has been caught using pirated Windows administration software. It’s an embarrassing development for a company that has fought so hard to keep its own content from being pirated.

PointDev, a French software company that makes Windows administration tools, received a call from a Sony BMG IT employee for support. After Sony BMG supplied a pirated license code for Ideal Migration, one of PointDev's products, the…

Is Adobe Photoshop Really $649 better than GIMP?

The GIMP is a robust software package for editing images in much the same way Photoshop is, it is open source and free so how does Adobe still charge such a high price for Photoshop?

I've read many comments about GIMP posted around the web and its often something like “in Photoshop to do something this way you just do this, but in GIMP you have to do it this way and I'm not used to it”. Well guess what, just…

Awesome Redesigned Gmail Look (Firefox Only)

Google’s design team is either incredibly lazy or extremely concerned with making sure old people, and people still using Netscape can check their email. To be frank - it’s ugly and looks very outdated. Using the Firefox plugin “Stylish”, you can change the way your Gmail looks into this slick theme.

This is a difficult site to remaster. I think what you've done so far is very thorough and internally cohesive. I also like that your color modifications haven't created the same ugly effect around the "stars" like many…

Firefox 4 will push out the edges of the browser

The philosophy is this: The browser needs to evolve. Beard believes the browser concept hasn’t fundamentally changed in 10 years. It’s still an isolated piece of software. Mozilla Lab’s push is to blur the edges of the browser, to make it both more tightly integrated with the computer it’s running on, and also more hooked into Web services.

Beard wants the new online/offline, browser/service to be more intelligent on behalf of its users. Early examples of this intelligence include the “awesome bar,” which is what Mozilla calls the new smart address bar in Firefox 3. It…

When in Rome: engineering the Firefox 3 user experience

Ars sat down with Mozilla user design expert Alex Faaborg and discussed the Firefox 3 visual refresh. Among other things, he told us how Mozilla is improving platform integration in theming while defining a universal visual identity for the Firefox browser.

Creating the Windows Vista theme posed some unique challenges because the developers had a bit of trouble figuring out where to use certain Vista-specific aesthetic flourishes like black dialog toolbars. Another weakness in the Firefox 3 Vista…
